Visitation with family will be Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the funeral home. Memorial service will be Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 1:30 PM at Crossings Community Church Chapel, 14600 N. Portland, OKC, OK.
Bill Smith, 79, passed away on April 26, 2014. He was youngest of six children of Dr. Earl C. and Sammie Smith. He was born in Abilene, Texas on February 27, 1935 and moved to Siloam Springs, AR in 1936.
He married Joan L.G. Buchanan on August 23, 1956 in Hawthorne, NJ. They had two children, Linda Jean and Wayne Keith; two grandchildren, Heather Ryan and Bonnie McMichael; four great-grandchildren; Autumn, Shelby, and Hayden McMichael, and Ashlyn Ryan.
He obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering from John Brown University in Siloam Springs. He was employed for 17 years in the aerospace industry as an engineer and manager. He worked for Douglas Tulsa, Boeing Wichita, Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, AL. After his aerospace career he worked in sales and sales management, which included more than 20 years in insurance, mainly as District Manager with AFLAC. He finished his employment career as Director of SHICP (Senior Health Insurance Counseling Program) in the Oklahoma Insurance Department.
He was always proud that he worked with NASA in Huntsville during the exciting time of the early manned space program and the landing on the moon.
Through the years he served as usher at Metro Church, City Church, Belle Isle/Crossings Community Church, where he also volunteered with Mobile Meals and Cookie Ministry.
He taught Navigating Medicare at Francis Tuttle Center.
He served on the Board of Directors/Treasurer of POEMSS (Project for Optimal Emergency Medical Services for Seniors) and on the board of the Neighborhood Home Owners Association.
His hobby was "playing" the Stock Market with Investor's Business Daily in Monthly Meet-Up meetings. Member of Town Hall and Jewel Box.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, three sisters, and granddaughter, Heather.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Joan, daughter Linda Jean, son Wayne Keith, and daughter-in-law Lyn, grandson-in-law David Ryan, granddaughter Bonnie, and grandson-in-law B.J. Michael, great grandchildren Autumn, Shelby, Hayden McMichael and Ashley Ryan, brother Don, several nieces, a nephew, cousins, and family by choice, Johnny, Carla, John/Sarah, Aleace Reason, Lyn and Maggie Hicks.
