William Eugene "Gene" Martin, age 102, passed away peacefully at his home on March 1, 2024. He was born on May 6, 1921, in Jones County, Texas to parents, Burnett Laurel and Ora Bell (Neal) Martin. After graduating from high school, he married the love of his life, Freeda (Dubose) Martin, on September 19, 1941. Together, they had 5 children, one of which passed away as an infant. Gene and Freeda provided a loving home for their children and taught them to love the Lord, as they did. They were faithful members of Sunnyside Baptist Church, and then they joined what was formerly known as Metropolitan Baptist Church and then Southern Hills Baptist Church. He always loved teaching others the word of God. Gene was a Sunday school teacher and also held bible studies. He worked at FAA for 30 years as an air traffic control instructor, until his retirement. When Freeda became ill, he was her sole caregiver for 10 years, until her passing on February 8, 2015. They had 76 wonderful years together. In Gene's spare time, he loved tinkering around with old radios and going camping in Red River, New Mexico, but most of all, he loved being around his grandkids and great grandkids. His family meant everything to him.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 76 years, Freeda; beloved daughter, Paula Sue Martin; Infant son, Travis Lee Martin; great granddaughter, Paige Linster; great great granddaughter, Lilly Guzman and brother, Jack Martin.
He will be greatly missed by his 3 children, daughter, Frances Harrison and husband, Jimmy, William Martin and wife, Kathryn and Gerald Martin and wife, Nancy; 9 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 13 great great grandchildren; and sister, Jo Weeks.
