Obituary for Marilyn Ann Fibus (Mitchell)

Marilyn Ann Mitchell Fibus, 83, was born on January 9, 1933 and died August 12, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. She was born to Howard and Lola (Higgins) Mitchell in Wichita, Kansas. Her childhood was spent working the soda fountain at her father’s local drug store. She graduated from Wichita North High School in 1951 and then attended Wichita University and St. Joseph School of Radiology where she became a radiology technologist. She met her loving husband Jess Fibus, and they were married August 21, 1954. Once they started their family, Marilyn became a stay at home mom, helping with Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and serving as home room mother for each of her children. She also provided a home for Jess’ younger sister Vicki after their parents died. Marilyn was a gifted seamstress and won many ribbons for her craft at the Oklahoma State Fair. Later in life Marilyn took up quilting and helped start the New Covenant Christian Church Quilters group. She stitched with love a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren. She was a charter member of New Covenant Christian Church, served her church as President of the CWF, and helped craft the banners that hang year round in the church Sanctuary. She was a volunteer at the Frontier Drugstore Museum in Guthrie, served on the Salvation Army Auxiliary, and was known by many as Mrs. Claus. In 2013, Marilyn was named online favorite in the Miss Wellington pageant and was presented her crown by Kendrick Perkins. Her favorite job was that of “mammy” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to participate in their lives, always serving as their biggest cheerleader. Marilyn is predeceased by her parents, and husband Jess. She is survived by son Steve Fibus (Susan), daughters Carrie Rohr (Mike) and Claire Dodson (Steve) all of OKC. Also survived by sister, Delilah Nitcher of Wichita, Kansas, brother, John Mitchell (Carmen) of San Antonio, Texas, sister-in-law Vicki Dailey (Jim) of Travelers Rest, South Carolina; six grandchildren; Joe Rohr (Olive), Sam Rohr, David Fibus, Daniel Fibus, Kayla Jones (Jeff) and Paige Dodson; great grandchildren Alex Cox and Caitlin Rohr, and many nieces and nephews. Marilyn was also anxiously awaiting the birth of twin great granddaughters in November. We would like to thank the staff and residents at Lionwood Senior Living for providing mom a safe and happy environment these last four years. We’d also like to thank Frontier Hospice and Universal Home Health for providing care and comfort these last few months. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to New Covenant Christian Church. Services will be held Tuesday, August 16, 11:00 am at New Covenant Christian Church, 12000 North Rockwell, Oklahoma City. Visitation will be Sunday and Monday with the family greeting visitors from 5-8 pm Monday, August 15 at the funeral home.
