To start off, my name is Calvin E. Backer, age 91, of New Ulm, MN.
I have very fond memories of John. I went to school with him in New Ulm, MN. We were very good friends and teammates on the baseball, backetball and football teams.
John introduced me to my first wife, his cousin, Carol Esser Backer who passed away in 1996. We were married for 49 years. I'd say John did a GOOD JOB picking out a wife for me.
Now for a story - As I said earlier, John and I were on the New Ulm HIgh School football team together. One game is unforgettable. Why? Well I didn't play. When I returned home after the game that night, my father demanded to know why I sat on the bench. "Well dad" , I said, "john Esser kicked me you know where and I couldn't play. The coach was ..... because we were fooling around."
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I extend my Sincere Sympath to the family. John was a GOOD MAN!
P.S. John and I would visit once a year and he would keep me updated on his grandson Sam and his football career.
