LaVerne, 94, died July 24, 2017 in OKC. LaVerne was born September 2, 1922 in Granite, Oklahoma to Frank and Minnie (Wilhite) Sumrall. On July 20, 1940, she married Omar L. Dennis, Sr. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Oklahoma City and began raising their family. When Omar died suddenly in 1961, she chose to raise the three children still at home by herself. She was an extremely strong person and never used what was dealt to her as a crutch or an excuse. She instilled in her family the value and reward of hard work, and she had high expectations of her children of whom she was extremely proud. She attended Hills Business College to prepare for starting a career. At the time, she earned the highest grades on record at the school. In 1963, she began working as a teletypist for Sears & Roebuck, where she remained employed until 1984. After retirement, LaVerne took up many hobbies and interests. She was always an avid reader and a wonderful seamstress. We can honestly say that she lived her life to the fullest, independent for the most part with a minimum amount of assistance, and she left this world on her own terms. She was the rock of our family, and will be dearly remembered.
She is survived by her sons: Omar Dennis, Jr. & wife, Mary; Mike Dennis & wife, Margie, and Kevin Dennis & fiancée, Alisha Wolfe;
Daughter, Lucy Fritts & husband, Scott.
Her legacy lives on through her 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to PossibilitiesInc.org, American Cancer Society or the American Heart Assoc.
